Our COVID Response
Reducing isolation, enriching lives and promoting the concept of living well and aging well has long been the basis of our mission as a senior center in an urban setting. During the Covid-19 pandemic, this mission has not essentially changed. The way our work is done has been altered, but our caring for those who look to us for service and socialization remains uncompromised.
We understand that our responsibility to our members and participants as a point of engagement extends beyond the walls of our physical building and out to the greater community itself.
Through programs and personal outreach, we strive to allay the loneliness of isolation our members may experience in this period of quarantine, and pledge to be a stable, familiar force for them in an unfamiliar time. Ultimately, we strive to nurture, maintain and continue to build what is our shared sense of community through these efforts.
The San Francisco Senior Center (SFSC) opened in Aquatic Park in 1947 as the first non-profit senior center in the United States. Aquatic Park Center has served seniors continuously for 74 years.
The Downtown Center location of SFSC was the first senior center in California to receive funding from the Older American Act, opening in 1966. In November 1985, the downtown location relocated to 481 O’Farrell Street, tripling its space for programs, social services, and offices.
